Starbucks @ Changi Jewel

The opening of Changi Jewel has inspired many of its retailers to incorporate greenery into their store one way or another. Starbucks has gone with preserved moss to accommodate to the layout design which seems to have sparked the trend for preserved moss wall in 2019!

Pan Pacific Hotel Groups: Marina Mandarin Hotel

The double-sided wall features big matured bird nest fern and monstera deliciosa that required special method of installation but absolutely possible for the plants to thrive!

Banks

Banks such as UOB & OCBC are adding greeneries to their branches to change up the traditional banking experience!

UOB

You can spot multiple UOB branches around Singapore with green walls as well! Waterway point, Ang Mo Kio Hub, Paya Lebar Quarters, Choa Chu Kang.

OCBC Frank @ NUS University Town

Singapore’s first open-concept bank branch that is accessible to students 24hr! Designed for students to utilise this space to study or relax, “Come, use our space, use it for your own needs,” said Leong Huang Zi, OCBC Bank’s experience designer, group customer experience.

The motivation behind the modern design was to change the traditional image of the banks – boring, according to customer’s feedback.

At their office, a large amount of Sansevieria was used. The plant is known for its ability to clean the air better than most indoor plants.

Robert Bosch

The newly renovated office pays particular attention to working conditions, implementing an environment with good design, clean lines, smart technology, green areas and trendy decor – keeping the associates’ wellness in mind, to improve overall productivity and creativity. Right at the entrance, associates and guests are greeted by a great moss wall!

Shopee Asia Headquarters

Shopee said its new office was designed to “maximise comfort” for all employees. Achieved with elaborate welfare programmes in place and a beautiful environment to work in!

These 3 standalone green wall helps to distinguish the collaboration space from the common walkway. The back of the standalone also acts as a whiteboard to facilitate discussions.

McDonald’s @ Vista Point

The first McDonald’s in Singapore that features a green wall. The restaurant extends more seats to an alfresco setting. Geared with 2 big fans along with an extensive green wall that will be sure to fight off the heat on a hot day!

Looking at Office of Trend Micro

A global cybersecurity company with their Asia-Pacific, Middle East and Africa headquarters located in Singapore. Situated at one of the Suntec Towers that oversees the beautiful Marina Bay. However, the bay view is not the only thing that is worth admiring, the office is also a beauty itself!

Trend Micro engaged M Moser to design an office that was suited for a human-centric workspace that inspires collaboration and facilitates meaningful connections. An office that brings energy, mobility, and technology into the workplace while promoting the well-being of staff and guests.

We will be exploring how M Moser has utilised greenery in the office to achieve their aims.

Employees and guests are instantly greeted by the sounds of nature – birds chirping and river flowing along with a lush green wall. It makes you leave behind the hectic journey you might have encountered to arrive here, ready to tackle the day with a clear mind.

Accompanied by a big lounge area right in front of the green wall, it offers employees a space where they can relax and interact when they need a break.

As you go around the office, you will notice many of the workspaces have greeneries in close proximity. This has to do with the fact that, often, how we feel in space affects how we function and work. Plants are powerful decor that changes the atmosphere of a space drastically – visually and environmentally.

Employees were 15% more productive when workplaces are filled with just a few plants, as employees who actively engage with their surroundings are better workers.

Here are some of the plants that are used around the work desks to purify and improve the air quality and aesthetics:

Ficus Lyrata – helps eliminate dust and controls humidity.

Schefflera arboricola – eliminate toxins: benzene, formadehyde & toluene, from the air.

Anthurium andraeanum – eliminates toxins: formaldehyde, ammonia, toluene & xylene.

Philodendron bipinnatifidum – low maintenance, great accent plant.

Ficus benjamina – eliminates toxins: airborne formaldehyde, xylene and toluene from the air.

Dypsis lutescens – eliminates toxins: acetone, xylene, and toluene from the air.

Ficus elastica – low maintainenece & eliminates toxins: formaldehyde, bacteria and mold spores in the air

Rhapis excelsa – eliminates toxins: formaldehyde, ammonia, toluene & xylene from the air.

All the plants help to increase the level of oxygen level which improves the concentration level, boosting productivity. With cleaner air, the chances of employees falling ill will decrease as well. You can read more about wellness indoors here.

Aside from the smart use of plants, here is an ingenious way they incorporate a whiteboard with reindeer moss splitting it into sections. An essential tool for ideation, this integration allows multiple teams to use the board and prevents the wall from looking too dull!

Still, on an island with limited land space, we are best known for our smart city planning solutions – particularly in our skyrise greenery standards!

Plans for 2030

In the Sustainable Singapore Blueprint, the target by 2030 is to achieve 200 ha of skyrise greenery. From 80 ha to 200 ha, that is a jump of 150%! That is why, at Vertical Green we have innovated a green wall system that is efficient and flexible so that it can be installed anywhere! Tying in with the nature theme of Changi Jewel, Starbucks Reserve brings to you a whole new level of integrated nature retail experience! With a concept of “From Farm to Cup”, you’ll be greeted with a beautiful layering of wooden slats and HyGroMoss facade at the shopfront! Even the green background of the iconic logo is made out of mosses!

You can find a Reserve Bar with friendly baristas with a mossy backdrop as they work their magic to bring you a neat cup of coffee for you to enjoy You bet this coffee shop will be filled! No need to worry though because you’ll be able to find more seats on the 2nd storey.

As you climb up the steps, it’s as if you’ve been transported from a coffee house to a museum! You’ll see a magnificently crafted wall art of a mermaid followed by a moss installation and many other art pieces are featured here, celebrating the arts scene around Asia.

In this piece of moss installation, Designer JB Galac played with the different combinations of our Pole, Flat, Reindeer and some small artificial leaves in the different zones marked out by copper metals. The lines may seem random, but it is actually created by the outline of a scenic landscape of the coffee plantation.

Changi Jewel is definitely a place you’d want to go have a look before catching your flight the next time you are travelling!
